Photo border maker: white, black and custom-color frames
Use this online photo border maker to add a solid frame around the full image. A white border gives portraits and artwork a clean margin, a black border separates a bright photo from the page, and a custom color can match a brand or presentation. Set the width in pixels so the frame is consistent across your pictures.
White photo border
Start with 40 px on every side for a 1200 × 800 px photo. The result is 1280 × 880 px, with the original composition intact.
Black border around a picture
Choose the black swatch and try a 10 px width for a thin rectangular outline. Increase the width if you want a heavier frame.
Instant-photo style frame
Unlink the sides. Try 40 px at the top, left and right, then 120 px at the bottom for a wider lower margin.
These widths are starting points: a 40 px border looks much wider on a small image than on a large one. Preview the result before downloading. To choose a border that matches your picture, first extract a color palette from your image, then select that color in the border editor.
How to add a white border to an Instagram photo
For a consistent photo series, use the same white border width on images with similar dimensions. If the source sizes vary, resize photos to the same dimensions first so the frames look similar in proportion. Then select your images together and apply one border setting to the batch.
To fit a landscape photo inside a square without cropping, add more padding above and below it. For example, a 1200 × 800 px image needs 200 px on the top and bottom and zero on the left and right to become 1200 × 1200 px. To keep a visible frame on every side, use 40 px left and right and 240 px top and bottom instead; the output becomes 1280 × 1280 px.
After framing, use the Instagram image resizer for posts and Stories when you need a specific final canvas size. For a square output, you can also resize the bordered image to 1080 × 1080 pixels. Keep the same aspect ratio to avoid stretching the photo.
Add padding to an image without cropping
Image padding is extra space outside the original picture. Here, that space is filled with your chosen border color. Adding a border expands the canvas; it does not cut off the edges or scale the photo. To remove unwanted areas before framing, crop your image to the right aspect ratio first.
| Result | Top / bottom | Left / right | Output size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin frame | 10 / 10 px | 10 / 10 px | 1220 × 820 px |
| Even white border | 40 / 40 px | 40 / 40 px | 1280 × 880 px |
| Wider bottom margin | 40 / 120 px | 40 / 40 px | 1280 × 960 px |
| Square canvas | 200 / 200 px | 0 / 0 px | 1200 × 1200 px |
Output width = original width + left + right. Output height = original height + top + bottom. Check the live output dimensions if you are preparing a product image, portfolio page or print layout. Border values are pixels, not physical print measurements; the printed margin also depends on the print size and printer settings.
Add borders to multiple photos at once
Select up to 20 JPG, PNG or WebP images, choose a color and set the side widths. The same settings apply to every image. Select a filename to preview that photo, then download one image or save the batch as a ZIP. This is useful for product catalogs, portfolio galleries and photo collections that need matching frames.
Each source image keeps its own dimensions plus the selected border. If a large image exceeds the output limit, reduce the border width or resize the source before exporting. For lighter website galleries, compress the bordered photos after downloading.
Add a border to PNG, JPG or WebP
Choose PNG for screenshots, graphics and photos where lossless output matters. Transparent areas within an original PNG stay transparent in PNG output; the new border itself has a solid color. Choose JPG for photos when a smaller file is useful. JPG uses lossy compression and fills interior transparency with white.
You can add a border to a WebP image and export it as PNG or JPG. If your photo is an iPhone HEIC file, convert HEIC to JPG before adding it. Each input must be 20 MB or smaller, and the final canvas must stay within 24 megapixels and 8192 pixels per side.
Photo frame, sticker outline or screenshot background?
This tool adds a rectangular border around the image canvas. A sticker outline follows the edges of a person, logo or other cutout, which is a different effect. Adding a border to a transparent PNG here frames the canvas; it does not trace the visible subject.
For presentation screenshots with gradients, shadows and rounded corners, use the screenshot beautifier. To put a caption or label into an exported picture, open add text to image after framing. For a round avatar instead of a rectangular frame, crop your photo into a circle.
